Hundreds of families, friends and fitness fans donned their finest pirate costumes and took to the historic cobbles of the Barbican recently for the Jeremiah’s Journey Pirate Fun Run, raising an impressive £4,000 for the local charity dedicated to supporting grieving children and their families.
The event, held on Sunday 18th May, and as part of the record-breaking Plymouth Pirates Weekend, welcomed participants to walk, jog or run a picturesque 2.5km or 5km route around the Barbican, the Hoe and waterfront, ending at Commercial Wharf.
This is just the second year that the Pirates Fun Run has been held and it continues to grow in popularity, combining family-friendly fitness in a stunning location with fundraising for an important local cause. Jeremiah’s Journey, which provides free support to children and young people who are facing the death of someone special or have experienced bereavement, will use the funds raised to expand its services across the city.
Jon Walton and Kim Downer, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership:
“A huge thank you to everyone who took part in the Jeremiah’s Journey Pirate Fun Run and fundraised for this fabulous charity. £4,000 will make a big difference to them and the support they provide. Plymouth people are known for their generosity and community spirit, and this was just another brilliant example in this truly special city – huge thanks!
A special thank you to Plymouth City Council, Taurus Events, Arlo Solutions and Plymouth Active for their part in making this year’s run such a success.”
John Naismith, Jeremiah’s Journey:
“What an incredible time we all had at the Jeremiah’s Journey Pirate Fun Run! We were overwhelmed by our local community’s kindness and are delighted that £4,000 was raised for the charity. This vital contribution will directly benefit the children and families we help, as we operate without statutory or commissioned funding. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all participants and to Plymouth Waterfront Partnership for their support.”
Plans are already underway for next year’s event, with Plymouth Waterfront Partnership keen to see even more participants for the pirate-themed fun run and an even greater fundraising target.
